As a start out web developer, it can be frustrating trying to figure out why your visitors won’t just click your ads. There’s plenty of things you can look at, that you’re doing wrong. In this article, I will try to give you some quick tips and ticks on how you can increase your CTR (Click Through Rating) for Google’s Adsense, and hopefully you can make some more money.
Note: Most of the techniques discussed here can also be used with YPN (Yahoo!’s Publisher Network) advertisements.
Blending
The most effective way of optimizing your ads is by blending them with your websites content. Making your ads not look like ads is the key here. The more your ads blend in with your websites content, the more likely your users are going to click them (mostly by mistake).
Ad Placement
In my experience online, placing ads right in the websites content generates the highest CTR. You should avoid placing them where it’s most likely to be avoided or scrolled past. Put yourself in the shoes of your users, and pinpoint where their eyes will wander the most.
Here are some good ad placement examples:
- Right Below Your Sites Header or Banner
Placing a 728×90 ad unit or a 728 link unit below or above your sites header can be an effective strategy for increasing your CTR, because most users probably think it’s some sort of navigational unit, or something important related to that website. - Inside the Content
Placing your ad code inside some of your divs with content in it, and assigning them a float to the left or right will have your ads blending in almost seamlessly. - At the start of content
I have one site where, at the top of the content block, there’s a 336×280 block. I’ve seen great results from this single ad. - In between content
If your website has daily post articles, or very long text, you can seperate every few paragraphs with an ad block
You want your ads to blend in with your websites color scheme. Changing the link colors to match your anchor links, or your default text color, you will improve that blending. You are not limited to the few different color schemes they give you, you can change the hex codes! So start picking out colors that get you more integration!
No More Borders!
Nothing says “This is an Ad” more than a border. You honestly don’t need them. By keeping the border, you are separating your site from the ad, making it easier for the users to ignore it. If you remove that border, your ad is now part of your content.
Utilizing the “Link Units”
Your website is allowed three ad unites, and one link unit. So why not take advantage of this? Even though your users will have to click two links before you get paid, you’re still improving your chances by having then not.
Experminentation
Always keep at it until you’ve gotten the formula for what works best for that particular site. Most of the time, you won’t be making money with adsense in 1 day. It takes a lot of hard work and patience.
Try it Again!
Once you’ve gotten your formula down, you pretty much know what works good and what doesnt. It’s time to try it again! What I mean by this is, if you have one site making $100 / mo off of adsense, why not make another site just like it? You now know what you have to do in order to start bringing in the money, so do it again and again!
