Publishers Lawsuit Settled by Google

Google will have to pay $125 million to settle a lawsuit for scanning millions of books. The lawsuit was filed by the Authors Guild along with five publisher members of the Association of American Publishers.

The agreement that was reached is still subject to approval by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, where the establishment of a book-rights registry will be set up. Through the service, book will be scanned and then can be viewed partly online or fully for those who wish to pay.

If the deal goes through, then Google will pay $125 million to rights-holding plaintiffs and to cover legal fees, $30 million of that amount will help towards setting up the new registry.
